Exploratorium

Exploratorium is a really fun science museum. I went there with my family, my cousin and his mom and myself. We first went to check in and we got some stickers from the check in place. Then we went to this sand thing. There’s a lot of obstacles in the sand thing. It’s on a piece of metal with glass on it. The outside is shaped like a circle. It’s basically a glass circle and a metal circle with little obstacles the same shape with sand inside the circles. You have to turn it slowly and it sort of makes you dizzy. Next we went to this water drop pictures things. A water drop would drop and a picture would be taken. You would have to time it in milliseconds. There was this little window and you would stick your head in and then your picture would take a picture with you in it  . The coolest one was the one where you had to make a tornado. You would have to walk around in circles in the same pace and then you would make a tornado. I did it but a little girl got in the way so I came off. Then what I remember we went to this thing where there were shadows of cyan, magenta, and yellow. You could dance around with 3 different colored shadows. Then we saw this thing where there were 2 things across the room. You could talk in a normal voice and the person across you would hear the thing that you were saying. It was awesome. Then we came across a thing where there were blocks and if you took off the top one then all of the ones would fall down. We did that and made it back again. It was time for lunch after that. I ate salad. I couldn’t eat meat because I planned to be a vegetarian for one week  .Then we went to this thing where there were bubbles and you could make them with your fingers. There was also a big circle wand thing and you could blow giant bubbles. Then there was a hall of pictures of stuff in slow motion or something. At the end, we didn’t get to go upstairs because Exploratorium was closing  . At least we finished the one where you have your left and right picture of your face taken and the left picture gets mirrored and you put them together to make your face. You do that with your right part, too. Then you decide which one looks better.
Fun fact: The curiosity rover landed on Mars on August 5, same as my brother’s birthday  !!

Poems from the Yellowstone trip

Yellowstone Trip

Going to Yellowstone has been really fun! I went with my family, Jade and Crystal’s family, and Jenny’s family. We first arrived at Utah, and stayed at a hotel. Then we went to another state, but I don’t remember which. The next day the group went to Grand Teton and hiked. It wasn’t tiring but Jade and Crystal were really tired. I wished I could still hike with them  . We saw a lot of chipmunks and this really cute marmot  .
Now comes the story of YELLOWSTONE!!!

On the first day, I went to see a lot of geysers. You have to stay on the sidewalk or else the acid will probably burn you in the geysers. Ouch  ! We saw some geysers erupt. This one geyser called the old faithful erupts about every 15 minutes. My favorite geyser was the morning glory or beauty pool  . The color was the heat of the geysers. Brown was the coolest, then orange, yellow, green, blue, and finally clear. We saw a lot more geysers but I forgot the names. I remember at one geyser there was a rainbow over only my shadow  . Yay!

We just drove to see geysers again, but on the way we saw a grassy field and decided to play in it. In the end, a lot of people got muddy but I didn’t. We stopped a lot of times to see the bison. They were walking around eating the grass. The baby bison reminded me of Jenny’s dog, Terry. You have to stay 25 yards away from bison and 100 yards away from bears. But the bison were awesome. They were brown and had these mustache things  .

Sorry, I don’t remember what happens after. My mind is blank. I looked at my information sheet (aka the thing so I can remember what happened at yellowstone) . I can’t think of anything. The only thing I remember is us seeing a grizzly or black bear and going to this waterfall. I’m sorry for this inconvenience  .

Oh, yay! Here are some pictures of me and my friends at Yellowstone or Grand Teton.

This is my brother and my friends and I at Yellowstone.

These are geysers. They are Beauty Pool and Morning Glory. The geysers look alike, but they are different. They are both highly acidic.

I’m getting some of my memory back. While we were at Grand Teton, we had to go to on this boat thing across JENNY lake. Funny, huh? Because Jenny was riding across Jenny lake. That’s when we arrived and hiked on Grand Teton. My brother started naming stuff like this: He named a tree “tree of David Cosmos” even though his name was David Xie. He named a sparkly white rock “The Rock of Clouds” and a sparkly black rock “Alien Rock.” Soon we climbed on rocks that were red. It was easy to get up but hard to come down. But I finally came down from the rocks because I really wanted to go see other stuff. We soon hiked more and came to a lake to rest. The water was really cold.

We see some deer near a waterfall place  .

The waterfall place had this little island in the middle. You had to balance on some fallen trees to get to the small island. I went there with some of my friends. On the way back I accidentally dipped my shoe in the water and my socks were soaked. Noooo :!:

You should go to Yellowstone. There’s a lot of animals and the cabins are nice. I think Yellowstone is a very awesome and natural place. I like how they protect bears, bison, and a lot more animals. The geysers are very pretty (even if they smell like rotten eggs). On the next vacation you should tell someone to go with you to Yellowstone.

Skiing at sugarbowl

Day 1
On December 16,2011, me and my family went to Sugarbowl. It was a 2 and a half hour drive from our house to Sugarbowl. When my family got to Sugarbowl, I immediately saw Jenny at the rental office. I put on my skiing clothes in the car. All of my friends and family went skiing except for Joby and Jenny. They were snowboarding. I went skiing with my brother and mom. I was skiing down Christmas Tree lane when I saw my mom fell. My family went to the hospital. After about an hour and 30 minutes, we found out that she twisted her knee  . We finally went to our cabin. I saw Jenny and Tim and Jenny decided we should play Risk. I got the countries North America and Australlia. Soon it got boring so we all quit because it got boring and nobody attacked. At dinner we ate a lot of yummy things. (I couldn’t remember what we ate.) Soon we all went to bed. We also told funny bedtime stories.
Day 2
I went skiing with Tim a lot because Jenny and David were at the top of Mt. Judah. I wanted to go also but my dad said “no”. I made big S’s while Tim skied the pizza way straight down. I was first skiing with Tim and Tim’s dad. It took a long time for Tim’s dad to get down  . Tim’s dad said Jenny’s dad should ski with us. We went on the lift and skied down Pioneer Road.Once while I was skiing down Christmas Tree lane, I even crashed into somebody  ! We went down a lot of times. soon we got tired so we went to Judah Lodge. Sugarbowl was closing just when Jenny and David skied down. We all went back to our cabin. This time we played Monopoly. We couldn’t finish the game. It was time for dinner. After we all went to sleep. No bedtime stories!
Day 3
This was the most fun day (except for skiing lessons.) At lunch my dad said I could go skiing with Jenny and David  . David said I have to follow his skiing tracks. I did and then we skied until the end of the day. We drove to our cabin. This time Frank and Joby played Uno with us. After dinner Tim said it was his mom’s birthday. I sang the quite insane song to get a gift card. We then had to end our game of Uno when it was time for bed.
Day 4
WE FINALLY ALL WENT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shark and the mouse

One time there was a shark. The shark was the biggest shark in the world. He loved eating mice. The shark would just wait in the water for a mouse to jump in. Once, no mice went in the water  .The shark was very, very, very hungry. Well, on top of the water was a mouse tied up to the string of an eagle. The eagle was flying in circles. The shark had no choice but to leap out of the water, open his mouth, and swallow a mouse. He tried many times, but he failed  . Finally, he did it.He ate it :!: Then there was a legend the shark didn’t belive. It was about a shark that leaped out of the water and swallowed a mouse that was tied to a string and hung by an eagle. Then the shark had to battle a ghost. The ghost of the mouse that was hung by the eagle. So, three weeks later, the ghost mouse appered and suggested a battle  . The ghost mouse won and the shark turned a little bit smaller. But then he still was the biggest shark. By EmilyXie

The tree (made up story)

Once upon a time there was a tree. Nobody was allowed to see it. It was on the other side of Mt. Everest. One day the tree grew so big that every one could see it. People thought the tree was ugly  . One time a fairy came and turned the tree into a Christmas tree. Now the people were allowed to see and touch it. One time a person cut down the tree  . Then the person that sold all of the ornaments and lights were sold by the person who cut down the tree. By the time all of the things on the Christmas tree were sold, the person glued back the tree. The fairy came again and now turned the tree into perfect origami paper. The person cut down the tree and cut the tree into exact squares and sold it to people. Then they band-aided the tree because there was no glue left. After about 3 or 4 months, the tree healed  .The fairy came for the last time and the tree got turned into pixie hollow  . Inside pixie hollow were clay fairies. The same person sold all of the fairies, but he left the tree in its place because they ran out of sticky things. They gave it to the people who stink at origami  The person who sold all of the stuff was now REALLY rich. Now the fairy never returned again, so the tree lived in peace. By Emily Xie      :?           :!: :?:

My trip to Lake Tahoe

On last Monday of 2010, my family and me went to Lake Tahoe. Well we did not ski the first day, but we went to the Kings beach, which is on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. First we put on our boots (except my brother). Second, we saw a king’s, queen’s and jack’s river thingy migiger. Next, we we went to a bridge thing that was not exactly a bridge (it is actually a pier). I thought the pier was made out of wood :?: . Now we got off the pier.

We went to the ocean AGAIN. We found PERFECTO sand  . I took off my mitten. (Sorry in the begining I didn’t say “I put my mitten on.”) I put my hand in the sand. I didn’t press as hard as I could. When I pressed my hand in the sand, my brother was writing a “Kilroy was Here.” My dad took a picture of me putting my hand in the water. It looked like a painting.

We wandered around the beach and saw 2 snowmen. One was tiny, one was HUMONGOUS. (The humongous one had 2 faces: the front face was happy and the back face was mad.) The little one is happy.

We got in the car. It took us about 1 hour to get to the hotel in Reno  . Our hotel is called Grand Sierra Resort. We were at floor 12. Well I forgot what our room number was. But I am sure its between 1 and 1,000,000,000,000. Inside it has 1 TV, 2 beds, and 1 bathroom.

Winter Vacation 2010

As yet another year draws slowly again to the end and a new one is just around the corner, a well-deserved break is welcomed, accompanied with trips out of town. On this particular break, I visited places, both meaningful to me: Los Angeles and Lake Tahoe.

My first destination, LA, was my birthplace; I was born in the medical center of UCLA and presided in a nearby suburb, Valencia, until I was six. The previous time I was there, I was eight; now I am thirteen and have changed much, so I was excited to see how much my old friends had changed, too. Seeing how much Danlei, Crystal, Philip, and Anna have changed amazes me; they are in middle school and high school now, and have grown much taller, when we used to be first-grade buddies and three-foot-seven. My old neighborhood was very quiet and lonely on that particular day; very few people were seen. We did hold a conversation with a neighbor; we discovered that not much has changed on Milford Court, a tree was chopped down, a house went for rent, but overall, the same houses, the same cars, very much the same street.

We ventured to Universal Studios Hollywood for a day, but it was slightly disappointing; it was smaller than I had imagined. Nevertheless, the rides were very much fun. Riding a rollercoaster with the Simpsons and flying a dragon with Shrek, there were many memorable moments to be found there. My favorite ride would probably be the tour bus drive; we rode through the sets of classic movies such as Jaws, Psycho, and Jurassic Park. Meeting the Grinch and the denizens of Whoville from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, as well as Spongebob and Patrick in Santa hats running around, Universal Studios was obviously filled to the top with Christmas Spirit.

Returning to Walnut Creek for the weekend, we immediately began making preparations for our next destination: Lake Tahoe. This five-day endeavor embodied over eight hours in the car, two hotels, three ski resorts, and lots of snow-covered fun. I began to lead the family to adventuring on the blue lines.

The three resorts were very different in many ways. Diamond Peak, our first skiing area, featured short and small runs and very long lines, making it less desirable toward its customers. On top of that, a very vicious snowstorm was working its was through the region. Mom and I were lifted to the top to the mountain ridge, and the run was supposed to have beautiful views of the lake. Instead, the fog impaired visibility to the point in which you couldn’t see two feet in front of you, and the snow pelted the face not unlike needles. The more difficult, long trail caused Mom to fall and lose her skis, requiring an extra half-hour to put them back on. Another fall resulted in her sitting on the skis and sliding straight down while screaming.

Mt. Rose was our next resort, but Emily and I only skied there for a very short time; the snowstorm was still raging. Dad took me to the top this time, and a similar visibility impairment ensued. The freshly fallen snow and less people did give a smoother ride, though.

North Star, our finale, was undeniably the best ski experience of our trip. A sunny sky and fresh snow allowed us many rides up and down the mountain. There were many people there; Carl Yu brought many families for a group discount, and I skied with Jenny. We went down a more difficult blue line, called Drifter; its length and slope resembled a never-ending staircase. Dodging trees and bumps, we finally made it through.

This Winter vacation was definitely one of the most far-flung and exciting ones; from meeting old friends to skiing, it was all a big bundle of fun. Our family has progressed in snow-sports a lot, with Emily daring to follow us to the difficult blue lines and the rest of us bravely expanding our horizons. These two weeks are surely something to remember.
